HQ - Women in Saudi Arabia (posted for Melissa)

How has Saudi Arabia affected women's religious and social rights?

Please note - This is Melissa's historical question.

  1. This question confuses me quite a bit. Does this mean "how does the country Saudi Arabia affect women's religious and social rights" or "how are women's religious and social rights affected in Saudi Arabia"? Also, it is vague to use the word "Saudi Arabia." Do you mean the people of Saudi Arabia as a whole, the Saudi Arabian government, or a specific group within Saudi Arabia? I think that this question has potential, but it needs to be reworded so that it is much more clear what you are trying to argue.

Also, I think that you might want to tie this question to an event if there is a big one that you are basing this off of. If there is no event, then perhaps a time period. The question as it stands seems posed to address the entire history of women's religious and social rights in Saudi Arabia, and although I am not extremely knowledgable on this topic, the entire history seems to be far too broad a topic to cover in a 6-8 page paper.

This question seems almost entirely focused on social issues, which can work. However, you may want to think about what theme your topic focuses on--such as imperialism, nationalism, or religion.

  2. I agree with Kiran. In addition to his thoughts, I would like to add that you definitely need to specify who or what Saudi Arabia stands for. Also, I am guessing that you mean the women of Saudi Arabia in your question, but someone could interpret "women's rights" as the rights of women around the world, so specify that also. Another thing, you wrote "affected" in the past tense, therefore your paper will be written about past events in Saudi Arabia? Make sure that the tenses line up and make sense.

  3. Explain how this issue relates to themes from the course. What is the impact of gender discrimination? Also, specify a time period under consideration.
