Reflection - Nationalism in South Asia

Discuss the positive and negative impacts of nationalism in South Asia.  Specifically, consider religious fundamentalism, militancy, and communal violence in the post-partition subcontinent.

  1. Nationalism comes into effect in South Asia in the conflict between Muslims and Hindus in India. When India was broken up into Pakistan and India, migrations occurred because each ethnic group wanted to be with others so the Muslims moved to Pakistan and the Hindus moved to India. Nationalism in these groups sparked violence during these migrations. There continues to be conflicts between India and Pakistan today due to the intolerable views of nationalists in each country.

  3. Nationalism is having pride in one's country. This is shown positively in South Asia through Ghandi's non-violent civil disobedience in order to try and get Britain out of India. Also shown when Hindus and Muslims came together against a common enemy, Britain. Negative impacts in South Asia would be in the post-partition continent, there was a large amount of fighting between Hindus and Muslims. Another thing was that there was communal violence between the two groups, Muslims would target Hindus and vice versa. Finally, Pakistan, the land that the Muslims received, did not have as good agriculture, or industrial strength, and lacked the Infrastructure that India had which contributed to even more violence between the too groups, and created a long lasting conflict over Kasmir.

  4. There are many positive and negative impacts of nationalism in South Asia. Nationalism has united the subcontinent and forced out the unfair British rule. However, it has also divided the subcontinent into two rival states, Pakistan and India. There is a large amount of militancy that takes place between the two states, specifically between Islam and Hinduism. This has caused communal violence between the two different cultures such as burning houses and murder.

  5. Nationalism in South Asia had positive and negative consequences. Nationalism united Indians against British rule, which led to Indian independence, but it also united Hindu fundamentalists against Muslim fundamentalists and vice versa, resulting in violent clashes between the two groups that continue today.

  6. Nationalism has influenced many aspects of recent South Asian history. The desire for a hindu state in India has led to much violence between the Hindu majority and the large Muslim minority. This conflict of religions has caused nations in the area to frequently declare war upon each other under the guise of liberating their fellow followers. For those who do not wish to live in a religious state, there is still much violence between conflicting ideologies. Communities are rocked by riots of people who follow terror organizations for either side. There are still some benefits that both religions can appreciate, the countries they now so feverishly try to expand were given their independence due to the people becoming tired of living under British rule.

  7. The negative impacts of nationalism in South Asia is the violence that it has caused. The majority of the violence is between Hindus and Muslims in South Asia. The religious fundamentalism has led to groups of Hindus attacking Muslims, and groups of Muslims attacking Hindus. Also, there have been many conflicts since India was split into a Hindu state (India) and a Muslim state (Pakistan). These conflicts continue today.
The positive impact of nationalism is the independence India gained from Britain. Without the strong feeling of nationalism in India, Britain could have stayed for a lot longer. But, because the people India were proud to be Indian, and wanted to govern themselves, they gained independence from Britain.

  8. Nationalism led to many strong movements including Gandhi's peaceful protests, religious violence, and political corruptness. Gandhi led protests based on peaceful civil disobedience to try and fight for independence, unite the Muslim and Hindu population. On the next side of the spectrum, after Gandhi's death extreme violence between these two opposing sides escalated to a new high with the support of some politicians such as Modi's support for the Hindu majority.

  9. Nationalism in South Asia was ultimately the reason for the independence of India and Pakistan which had both positive and negative effects. The positive was that these ethnic groups now had an area to call their national home. However, as the Muslims went to Pakistan and the Hindus went to India, there were many religious conflicts and fighting.

  10. Nationalism in India was the start of a series of movements such as Gandhi's non-violent protests. Without Nationalism, the British wouldn't have been forced out of India as quickly as they were. Nationalism also had a negative effect on south Asia, because it has led to wars between Hindus and Muslims. Muslims and Hindus have been fighting for a long time and most of their conflicts have been over the land of Kashmir. There are two states that split out of the original India. There is now a Muslim state of Pakistan, and a Hindu state of India.
